Buhoma Community Rest CampBuhoma Community Rest Camp is a community based enterprise initiated by the local communities around the national park. It is located 570km from Kampala; it’s also situated right at the Forest’s entrance in the South Western part of Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is as big as 331km2 hence habours half of the worlds’ population of mountain gorillas in the whole world.

 

Buhoma Community Rest CampThe lodge has Bandas which are cabins but in a Welcome to the Buhoma Community Rest Camp African fashion, dormitories along with self contained tents that will make your stay comfortable. Located in Buhoma area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, this is a community project was set up to benefit the local people around Buhoma as well for that matter, stay in this lodge, you are directly helping the locals in the community.

Buhoma Community Rest Camp has many facilities to offer including 6 safari tents, self contained with a spectacular view overlooking the forest, 2 cottages well furnished, 5 twin cottages bandas which are not self contained.

The restaurant serves both international A fully stocked bar at Buhoma Community Rest Camp and local dishes that are well prepared by an expert chef. The bar is fully stocked with beers, sodas, wines, spirits and water. They have a craft shop just in case you need to buy a souvenir. The staff is friendly and welcoming to all guests.

Detailed itinerary

The beauty of this trip is that, although centered on certain special birds, we see so much of more widely distributed species on the way and tremendous scenery and places little visited by other tourists. This trip takes you through most of Uganda’s birding habitats together with national parks and Important Bird Areas. Areas to be visit on this trip consist of Mabira Forest, Kaniyo Pabindi, the Royal Mile and Busingiro in Murchison Falls Conservation Area, Kibale Forest, Semuliki Wildlife Reserve, Semuliki National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Mubwindi Swamp and Ruhija in Bwindi, Lake Mburo National Park, and Mabamba Wetland. The trail will take you around some of the most endangered and localized birds including the Albertine Rift Endemics.

 Day 1: Arrival

Here, we shall be welcoming you to Uganda. This is when we do all the airport pickups if there any and as well get to know the guide in charge of the tour as far as it will be taking.

Day 2: Birding to Mabira Forest

Early in the morning after have breakfast our representative is going to pick up at your accommodation of stay then you will head for birding in Mabira forest. Mabira forest the largest remaining tropical rain forest near central Uganda, also most significant ornithological places in Uganda with not less than 300 species. The  whole day you will be looking out for the Grey and Yellow Long bill, Olive Green Cameroptera, Tit Hylia, Yellow Billed, Yellow Spotted, Speckled, and Hairy Breasted Barbet, African pitta, Soty Fly Catcher, Fire Crested Allethe, Nahan’s Francolin, Weyn’s weaver, purple-throated cuckoo-shrike and many more.

Day 3: Birding to Masindi

Have breakfast and make your way to Masindi. Launch enroute will be done as we transfer out for grassland and open woodland birds. Birds that you will be most certain to view are the White Crested Turaco, Lesser and Greater Blue Eared Starling, African Mustached Warbler, Yellow Bellied Hyliota among others.

Day 4: Visit Kaniyo Pabidi for the Puvel’s Illadopsis

After a very early breakfast meal, we will embark on a journey driving to the southern part of Murchison Falls where we have a chance to see bird in the forest specifically out to get the Puvel’s Illadopsis, Narina Tragon, Fire Crested Allethe, Red Tailed Ant Thrush, Xavier’s, Ictrine, Plain and Little Greenbul, Ducky Long tailed Cuckoo, African Emerald Cuckoo, Grey and Yellow Long bill, Collard, Olive, Olive Bellied and Green Sunbird, Rufus Flycatcher Thrush, Crested Guinea Fowl, Yellow Billed Barbet and many other forest species.

Day 5: Birding to the Royal Mile and Busingiro

Check out and start the drive to the next birding destination, you will have a number of stopovers along the way looking out for grassland birds like the Black Bellied Fire finch, Brown Twinspot, Caban’s Bunting, Dark Capped Yellow Warbler, Fawn Breasted Waxbill, White Thighed Hornbill then continue for birding at the Royal Mile. Birding here always produces some of the rare Ituri species like the African Pygmy, and Chocolate-backed kingfishers, Ituri Batis, Lemon-bellied Crombec, Chestnut Capped Flycatcher, Blue-breasted and African Dwarf Kingfishers which are outstandingly frequent. Others include; Western Black-headed Oriole and Purple-headed Starling, Yellow spotted, Yellow Billed and Grey Throated barbet, Brown crowned Eremomela, Cassin’s and Sabine’s Spinetail, and many more. These birds will be tracked at two different spots, which are the Royal mile and Busingiro, in the late evening drive back to Masindi for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Birding to Kibale

Since the drive is long less birding will be done today because you will have less stop over’s to look for the birds. Our main specials today will be the Dusky long Tailed Cuckoo, Joyful, and Greenbul among others. You will get to your destination in the late evening where you will check in at

Day 7: Whole day birding in the forest

Start early after breakfast and go for a whole day birding walk through Kibale forest in search for special birds most especially the Green Breasted Pitta African Broadbill another species of birds. In the afternoon we go for birding in the Kihingamy Wetland Expect birds like Abyssinian Ground Thrush, African pitta, Joyful Greenbul, Pettit’s Cuckoo shrike, Masked Apalis, White headed wood hoopoe and many more. Dinner and overnight stay at primate lodge or Chimpanzee Guest House

Day 8: Birding to Semliki Wildlife Reserve

Transfer to Semliki National Park after you have had your breakfast. Lunch will be served at Semliki Safari Lodge because you will have reached in time for one of the most important meals of the day. However, later in the evening you will go on board on a birding and game drive providing chances of seeing nocturnal birds like African Scoops Owl, Pearl spotted Owlet, Slender Tailed, Pennant winged and White Tailed nightjars.

Day 9: Birding to Semliki National Park

Very early in the morning have breakfast and carry on for birding the whole day. This part is one of the best birding spots in Uganda as it habours birds from the West African forest that are found nowhere else in East Africa. birding here always produces the Lyre Tailed Honey Guide, Red Billed, Black Dwarf, Piping, Black Watltled Casqued and white Crested Hornbills, Grey crowned, Pale Fronted and Chestnut Bellied Negrofinch, Red Bellied, Blue Billed, Crested and Red Headed Malimbe,malimbe Yellow Throated Nicator, Fiery Breasted Bush shrike, African Piculet, Maxwell’s weaver, Black Throated Coucal, Yellow Throated Cuckoo, Western Bronze Naped and Olive pigeon, Red Tailed and Green Tailed Bristle bill, Eastern Bearded, Red Tailed, Ictrine and Xavier’s Greenbul, Palm Swamp Bulbul and the Leaf Love among others . Back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

 

 

Day 10: Birding to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Head to Queen Elizabeth Park. This is the second largest National Park in Uganda and home to 612 species of birds making it the biggest list for any national park in Africa and perhaps the whole world. The park has a variety of woodland birds, forest birds and water birds coupled with many northern Europe and transafrican migrant species. Today we spend our night at Mweya Safari Lodge Mweya Hostels or Kingfisher Kichwamba Lodge.

Day 11: Whole day birding and game viewing Queen Elizabeth National Park

Go for an early morning drive in the Kasenyi area in search for Game while birding. Early starts always produce views of the Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, other species expected on this birding day include the Brown, Short Toed and Brown snake eagle, Bateleur, African Harrier hawk, Martial and Tawny Eagle, Lizard Buzzard, Grey Kestrel, Crowned, Senegal and African wattled Plovers, Harlequin Quail, and Common Buttonquail among others. In the afternoon we embark on a launch cruise along the Kazinga channel which connects lakes George and Edward birding along this channel let us see the Great White and Pink-backed pelicans, African Spoonbill, Lesser Flamingo, African Jacana, Common Squacco Heron, African Open-billed Stork, African Fish Eagle, Grey Headed, Malachite and pied Kingfisher and many more.

Day 12: Birding to Bwindi

Have breakfast then transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable forest birding enroute. Today we have a chance to go though the Ishasha sector which provides chances of viewing the tree climbing lions and other game, lookout for grassland birds including the pipits Larks, African Cuckoo Hawk, Black Cuckoo, White Winged Tit, Ovambo Sparrow Hawk e.t.c we continue to Buhoma where we have our dinner and overnight stay at Gorilla Resort or Buhoma community Bandas.

Day 13 & 14: Birding or Gorilla Tracking

Today we have optional gorilla tracking or birding in the forest on the Bwindi Buhoma area for a full day. While birding we look out for Waller’s, Stallman’s, narrow tailed starling, warblers, Illadopsis, Hoopoes, Tragons, Sunbirds and many more.

Day 15: Birding to Ruhizha

Today we transfer to Ruhizha birding enroute through the neck.

Day 16 Birding Ruhizha

We start after breakfast and go out birding looking out for the Black-billed and Rwenzori Turaco, Western Green Tinker bird, Olive, Elliot’s and Fine-banded Woodpecker, African Green-Broadbill, Mountain, Yellow whiskered and Yellow-streaked Greenbul, African Hill Babbler, Mountain Illadopsis, Grey Cuckoo Shrike Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Grauer’s Warbler, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Chestnut-throated Apalis, Collared Apalis, Stripe-breasted Tit, Rwenzori Batis, Montane Sooty Boubou, Blue-headed Sunbird, Regal Sunbird.

Day 17 Birding to Lake Mburo National Park

Early in the morning have breakfast then we transfer to Lake Mburo NP. You will bird along the way to reach the park in the afternoon.

Day 18 & 19:

Have breakfast very early in the morning to go for more birding in the park along the Kigambira loop, which traverses a variety of productive habitats. Expect birds like African Marsh Harriers, Banded Snake Eagles, Shikra, Goshawks, Augur Buzzard, African fish, Twany, Steppe, and African Hawk Eagles and many more. Retire for the boat ride on Lake Mburo in the afternoon to check out some of the water bird species such as Papyrus Gonolek, Malachite Kingfishers, African fin foot, giant Kingfisher etc. on the 19th after birding we transfer to Kampala Dinner and overnight at Lindsay Cottages or Cassia Lodge

Day 20: Birding to Mabamba

Early breakfast and then with packed lunch proceed for birding in Mabamba Wetlands where you will be paddled in a canoe while birding through the swamp, look out for birds like the mighty Shoebill and other species like Long-tailed Cormorant, Squacco Heron, Yellow-billed Duck, Malachite Kingfisher, Long toed Plover, Blue-headed Coucal, Blue-breasted Bee-eater among other birds. Bird your way back to Kampala looking out for African open billed Stork, Grey Kestrel, African Green Pigeon, Great Blue and Ross’s Turaco later back to our lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Detailed itinerary

This safari runs for 15 days beginning and finishing in Kampala. It journeys you to the finest safari parks plus tourist sites in Uganda. Taking you to the Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth national park, chimp trekking in the Kibale Forest and the trilling gorilla tracking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Day 1: Kampala – Murchison Falls

Subsequently after breakfast, the guide will pick you up from your hotel to drive to the Murchison falls National Park. The only route to Murchison from Kampala takes you past the Luwero triangle were thousands of Ugandans were killed in war, through the Budongo forest in the western arm of the Rift Valley not to forget the splendid views of the countryside. You will arrive in the afternoon and head to the summit of the falls to enjoy the breathtaking views of the falls and the surrounding terrain. You will marvel at the waters of the great Nile forcefully making their way through the small 7 meter gorge and drop below to more than 40 meters with a thunderous roar, it is an undeniable  spectacular sight! Retire and slumber at Sambiya River Lodge or Red Chili Rest Camp or Paraa Lodge or Kaniyo Pabidi Camp or Masindi Hotel.

Day 2: Murchison Wildlife Tour

Before sunrise, begin the day with an early game drive in the early morning to see the early risers plus the predators. These will include: jackals, giraffe, antelope, Uganda kob, hyenas, lion and elephants. Return to the lodge for a late breakfast plus lunch. Enjoy an afternoon launch cruise on spectacular Victoria Nile which will journey you to the amazing bottom of the Murchison Falls seeing animals like buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles and elephants along the river banks and not to forget are the numerous aquatic birds like the uncommon shoebills plus the fish eagle. Day 3: Kibale Primates Forest Park

Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking from the Primates Forest

Set out looking for Chimps after having breakfast, within the tropical wet forest of Kibale. As you look for this closely related species, you will come across other primates like the Bush babies, Mangabeys, the colobus monkeys and baboons with of course guide education about the wildlife there. Enjoy lunch and after having lunch, you will get pleasure from a walk in the Bigodi Sanctuary which is encompassed of odd plant and animals as well as birds. Dine and slumber at Primates Lodge, or Ndali lodge, alternatively at Rwenzori Travelers Inn

Day 5: Semuliki National Park

Head to Semiliki National Park that is in the morning, this drive will journey to the lower eastern part of L. Albert. Located within the western Rift Valley basin, Semliki National Park is among the parks with a variety of habitat among which are Riparian forests, high savanna-grass, and rainforests ad low savannah-grass. A game drives conducted at night during which you will catch sight of the night-time residents such as slender mongoose, cats, leopards, white-tailed mongoose, standard winged nightjars, hyenas and pennant winged nightjars is prominent . This is the only park in Uganda that offers lit night drives. Generally, the park offers numerous surprises awaiting you to unfold. Dine and rest in Kanyankyu Ecological site or Semliki safari Lodge.

Day 6: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Following breakfast drive in to the shadows of Mt. Rwenzori were Queen Elizabeth National park is situated. The expedition will present thrilling game drives along the way. Arrive in the afternoon at the park to have lunch, and then continue for an awesome launch jaunt along the Kazinga channel. You will see a numerous number of hippos, aquatic birds plus buffaloes on the shores. Feast and sleep at Jacana Lodge or Mweya Safari Lodge or Ihamba Safari Lodge

Day 7: Wildlife Tour of Queen Elizabeth National Park

A game drive in the early morning will be what you begin with to see the early risers plus the predators fleeing into the bushes after hunting or read to hunt before the sun fully comes out. The drive is so filled with sights of bush bucks, hyenas, elephants, bush pigs, Lions, buffaloes and jackals. With that magnificent drive, go back at the lodge for lunch. After that delicious meal, proceed to the Kyambura gorge to trek chimpanzees. The chimp tracking walk will not necessarily mean you are just going to see the chimps; you will witness sights of baboons, black & white colobus monkeys and red colobus monkeys along the way. Dine and slumber at Jacana Lodge or Mweya Safari Lodge or Ihamba Safari Lodge

Day 8: Queen – Bwindi National Park

Following breakfast, on your way to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park it will be impossible not to have a have a game drive. Drive through the remarkable Ishasha region famous for its inhabitant tree climbing lions. Check in at Bwindi, rest and later enjoy a community walk within the surrounding communities. Dine and sleep at Buhoma community Bandas or Gorilla resort.

Day 9: Mountain Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi National Park

Normally, on this day, you wake up to an early breakfast and then proceed to the park head offices for a briefing proceeding to entering the forest in search for the mountain Gorillas. The trek starts at 9:00am you will enter into the forest hence look for the Gorillas. At this part of the tour, you will not have the guide that has been with you from the start of the tour, you will be guided a specialized guide who knows each and everything about the Gorilla. So you are called upon to feel free and ask as many questions as you can while the trek goes on. The activity is quite unpredictable but lasts from 2 to 8 hours basing on the gorilla’s movements. Gorilla tracking involves trekking steep rocks, and moving across the undulating terrain. On the other hand, the anticipations of coming nose to nose with the gorillas this will definitely make you forget how tired and worn-out you were from the hiking. However, this experience will reward you with breathtaking reminiscences. Dine and sleep at Buhoma homestead or Gorilla Resort

Day 1O: Lake Bunyonyi and the Switzerland of Africa

After an early breakfast, head to Lake Bunyonyi. This is a very spectacular destination with beautiful small islands and enclosed by steep terraced slopes. It is renowned as a birding paradise with several aquatic birds. The lake was name Bunyonyi to mean the small birds.  Dine and sleep at Lake Bunyonyi overland Camp

Day 11: Lake Bunyonyi and its Islands Tour

Enjoy canoeing in the morning on this stunning lake to see the various bird species. Dine and sleep at Lake Bunyonyi overland Camp

Day 12: Lake Mburo National Park

Set off to Lake Mburo National Park following a delicious breakfast. This park is famous for its numerous antelopes among which are impalas after which Uganda’s capital city was named –Kampala. Drive past breathtaking sceneries of the country side to arrive in the afternoon at Lake Mburo National Park. You will break for lunch before going for a canoe ride on the Lake as look for the various animals on the lake shore. Dine and sleep at Rwonyo Camp or at Mantana tented Camp.

Day 13: Lake Mburo Wildlife Tour

After breakfast have a morning game drive and later explore the flora and fauna of the park in the afternoon. The park is also renowned as a bird-watching paradise with more than 300 species in book. Dine and sleep at Rwonyo Camp or Mantana tented Camp

Day 14: Kampala Return Trip

After breakfast in the very early morning, you will embark on to a journey back to Kampala. You can always make a stopover at the equator to take some photos and visit the craft shop, and then arrive in Kampala in the later afternoon or evening.  Enjoy lunch and relax in the hotel for the rest of the day. Dine and sleep at Hotel Africana or Sheraton Hotel.

Day 15: Kampala City Tour

After an early breakfast, the activities that will follow will entirely depend on the scheduled time for your flight back home. Otherwise you will have a city tour in Kampala to visit the various sites like the Uganda Museum, Kasubi Tombs, Wamala Tombs Bahai Temple and the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine. After lunch you will drive to Entebbe International Airport to catch your flight back home.

Day 1: Airport Transfer

Day 2: Kampala City Tour

Go for a city tour around Kampala. Visit the historical and Cultural sites of Kampala like Kasubi Tombs, Namugongo shrine, Ssezibwa fall and then have lunch along the way to Jinja. At Jinja you will visit the source of the Nile; boat ride to the source s stunning, visit the Bujagali Falls.  Return to Kampala for dinner and at your Hotel

Day 3: L. Mburo National Park

Leave very early in the Morning after breakfast along Masaka Road. Take a stopover at the Equator. Then proceed to L. Mburo A game drive en route is rewarding  with herds of zebras, antelopes like Topis, Elands, the Uganda Kob ad many others.. You will arrive in the afternoon have lunch. Then after go for a boat ride along the L. Mburo. Dinner and over night at Mantana luxury tented camp/ Mihingo Lodge/ Rwonyo Camp

Day 4: To Queen Elizabeth National Park

Take breakfast then transfer to Queen Elizabeth You will pass through the scenic country side of Ankole .A game drive en route is rewarding with a variety of animals like Elephants, Buffaloes, mongoose among others. Have lunch and Visit the crater lakes region then after retire for dinner and overnight at Mweya safari lodge or Jacana safari lodge / Albertine camp

Day 5: Game Drive & the Launch Cruise along the Kazinga Channel

Wake up very early in the morning for an early morning game drive. This will be for the search of the early risers like Lions, leopards, hyenas and many other animals.  Return to the lodge for breakfast. Relax as you wait for lunch time. In the afternoon, you will be taken to the pier at the Kazinga channel for a launch cruise along the Kazinga channel. This will expose you to various aquatic mammals like the Crocodiles and herds of Hippopotami. The shore of this channel is well known for its massive flocks of birds like the African jacana, the fish eagle, pelicans among others.  Crocodiles have become a common sight here and occasionally leopards.

Return to your lodge for d inner and over night.

Day 6: To Bwindi National park

You will be transferred to Bwindi National park through the Ishasha sector. A game drive through this southern sector of Queen Elizabeth is famous for tree climbing Lion encounters. You will have a picnic Lunch in the Wilderness and then after transfer to Bwindi national park. Dinner and overnight at Gorilla Resort camp, Buhoma Homestead/ L. Kitandara Tented camp/ Buhoma community bandas.

Day 7: Gorilla trekking

Go gorilla tracking, walking up steep densely forested hills before finally coming across the gorillas camouflaged in the vegetation. An inspiring moment! (This trek can take from half an hour to 5 hours – a reasonable degree of fitness is required as well as a sturdy pair of walking shoes) Sit in the forest among the gorillas, listening to them grumble to each other, and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male; the silverback. It is an extraordinary feeling sitting in the dense rainforest knowing you are with a few of the last remaining mountain gorillas. It’s amazing to think there are only about 650 of these beautiful creatures left! If you have the energy this afternoon, take a guided walk on the Munyaga River trail, which is an ideal short walk. This trail leads to three delightful crystal clear waterfalls, and there is a profusion of tree ferns, epiphytic ferns, orchids and Bwindi’s colorful array of butterflies. Here you may also see birds and primates from the forest edge. Overnight at your lodge

Day 8: To Rwanda

After breakfast,   you will transfer to either Kisoro or Kabale .Cross the border then you will be driven to Kinigi. On arrival, you will visit the genocide memorial. Then Visit the Dianne fossey graves before dinner and overnight at Mt Gorilla nest lodge/ Kinigi guest House / Muhavura lodge.

Day 9: Gorilla Tracking

After breakfast, go gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans. Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virunga’s is a magical experience. The walks might be strenuous but an encounter of a family of gorillas is rewarding! Spend an hour with them, and be back at the base in time for a late lunch! Some gorilla families however are more elusive and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy.  Transfer to Kabale for your dinner and over night at Habuharo Island Camp/ Arcadia cottages/ Bushara Island Camp

Day 10: Back To Kampala

Take breakfast and then Visit the museums in Kabale from where you will be transferred to Kampala or Entebbe for your next flight back home.
